Associate Universities
In their second study year, EM Food of Life students will have the opportunity to apply for an EMFOL Scholarship that will allow them to undertake a short study period at one of the Associate Universities. During the study period, students can follow taught courses or periods of practical laboratory or industry experience.
University of Bristol
University of Bristol is a University whose excellence is acknowledged locally, nationally and globally. It is rated one of the top ten universities in the UK and ranked in the top 35 in the world. It has more than 30 departments or schools, organised in six faculties and boasts 12,000 undergraduate and 5,000 postgraduate students from around 100 countries. The University celebrates a very large number of international partnerships covering a huge range of activity, from student exchanges to joint research, technological transfer to simple sharing of resource. With over 3,500 international students, and 178 exchange partnerships, the university’s commitment to international education is clear.
The meat science group, based at the Langford campus within the School of Clinical Veterinary Science (DCVS), has a long tradition of excellence in research and teaching. The Langford campus has about 350 members of staff, 250 undergraduates and 60 postgraduate students. The breadth of the School's teaching and research interests enables it to offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses which include a taught MSc in Meat Science and Technology. This is a well-established course which is unique in the UK, highly regarded by the meat industry and attracts students from around the world.
University of Guelph
Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety (CRIFS) at the University of Guelph is a research network of researchers involved in Food Safety Research. The organization performs research on the microbiological safety of foods from primary production through to consumers. As well as research the Institute is actively engaged in training at both the MSc and PhD levels and also helps deliver a course work MSc program in Food Safety and Quality Assurance. Researchers within the Institue have active collaborations with Universities and Organizations in Europe, the United States, China and Australasia. This collaboration consists of both research and training.
Lincoln University
Lincoln University is New Zealand’s specialist land-based university, with a history stretching back more than a hundred and twenty five years. The University is less than twenty five minutes from Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island. It has an established campus noted for its space and the quality of the environment. The 58 hectare campus houses modern teaching spaces, an excellent library and campus facilities, and accommodation for approximately 650 students during the university year.
The Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences represents a land-based philosophy including research and teaching in: Nutrition and health, food science, agronomy and plant science, farm management, ecology, conservation and plant pathology.
The Department of Wine, Food and Molecular Biosciences covers course areas including animal and plant science, biochemistry, food science, horticulture, microbiology and sensory science. Staff is actively involved in teaching, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and involved in a wide range of research projects. Areas of research include: Meat quality, Animal, plant breeding and genetics (molecular and quantitative) to confer resistance to disease caused by pathogens , the use of animal models for the study of human diseases (cataracts, Batten’s disease, osteoporosis), the influence of environmental stressors on animal and plant health (microbial infections, UV damage in plants, temperature stress in dairy cattle and poultry)

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Milan is an academic organization that fosters scholarly activity and encourages interaction of academic world ant the society in order that veterinary sciences (Veterinary Medicine, Animal Husbandry, Animal Derived Foodstuff, Veterinary Biotechnology) may be imparted to students, expanded by research, and extended to the public for the benefit of animal and human health and to meet the changing needs of our society and for the preservation of the environment.
In order to fulfill the general objectives the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is focused on the following academic courses:
- Specialist degree course in Veterinary Medicine
- Undergraduate academic courses on: Animal husbandry and welfare, Animal production and foodstuff quality, Veterinary biotechnology
- Master degree course in: Animal production sciences and technology, Veterinary biotechnology sciences
